Château Royal d'Amboise opening hours

The seasonal swing is bigger than people expect
This is a Loire château, not a city museum: the hours follow the light. High summer gives you a long evening; late autumn and winter close in the middle of the afternoon, and a visitor arriving on a December train at three o’clock can find the gate closing behind them. If you are travelling in winter, treat the closing time as the thing you plan the day around, not the train.
The included guided visits run daily but on a timetable that also shifts with the season and with demand — fewer departures in winter, more in August. Ask at the desk rather than assuming: how the included visits work.
The two closing days
1 January and 25 December. That is the whole list, which makes Amboise unusually generous — many French monuments also close on 1 May, and this one does not. The dates that catch visitors out are on the closing-days page.
What can still be shut when the château is open
Parts of the site have been affected by the rampart consolidation works that began after a section threatened to give way in early 2025. The château has stayed open throughout, but individual routes, the gardens or a tower can be closed off at short notice. I keep what I know on the rampart works page, and the château’s own site is the place to confirm the day before.
Arrive within the first hour of opening if you can, especially in July and August. The Logis Royal rooms are small, the route through them is one-way, and by midday in high season it moves at the pace of the slowest group in front of you.
Planning around the hours
The entrance is not bookable online, so nothing you book commits you to a time at the château itself. The day trips below do run to a fixed schedule.
A reminder: what you book above is the guiding, or a day that includes entry. The Château Royal d’Amboise has no online entrance ticket — you buy that at the château’s own desk, and its guided visits are included in it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the château open every day?
Yes, except 1 January and 25 December.
Are the hours the same all year?
No — the seasonal swing is large, with very short winter afternoons.
Is there a last admission?
Yes, some way before closing. In winter this is the constraint that catches people out.
